Akoya Pearls
Akoya pearls are saltwater pearls
grown primarily in the cooler seas of Japan, but also in China by the smallest of all pearl oysters called
the Akoya oyster. Although the Akoya pearl originates in Japan, China is now producing exceedingly
high quality Akoya pearls. Akoya oysters typically produce two or three pearls per oyster compared
to freshwater oysters that can produce up to 50 freshwater pearls per oyster. Bead nucleation
of Akoya oysters yield mostly round white or cream pearls with pink or green overtones that range in size from
2 to 10mm and average 6 to 7.5mm. Akoyas are the most round and lustrous pearls in this range of
size and can also naturally produce blue, gray, and yellow body colors.
Akoya oysters can be bead
nucleated up to 5 times at once, with a development period of 9 months to 2 years. Only 5% of the
50% of Akoya oysters that survive nucleation produce best quality pearls. This limited production
of high quality near perfect round pearls is the primary reason for their higher market price. Akoyas
are also typically associated with the
white classic pearl jewelry admired on famous women like Jackie Onassis and Princess Diana, among
others.
