The only pearl to naturally form a dark color is the black pearl, produced by black lipped oysters found in the French Polynesian and Indian Oceans.  Black pearls are usually 8 to 17mm in size.  Black pearls (also called Tahitian pearls) are not exclusively black and come in a variety of dark colors that include: black, grey, dark blue, blue green, green, and brown with overtones of green, red or purple.

Saltwater black pearl jewelry will always have a deeper true black color to it than black freshwater pearl jewelry, which has a faded black to light gray appearance.  Saltwater black pearl jewelry is typically more round and lustrous than its freshwater counterpart, which is why black saltwater pearl jewelry is more expensive.  Sometimes black freshwater pearl jewelry will appear light or even multi-colored with overtones, which is standard in the industry.  Black pearls that are more round, larger, and with some overtones are the most preferred and valuable of all black pearl jewelry.
