Black Pearls

Black pearls are one of the most popular modern fashion accessories in the jewelry industry.  The pearl's black color is created either naturally from the Black Lipped oyster (Pinctada Margaritifera) for Tahitian Black Pearls or color treated by pearl processors for Black Akoya or Black Freshwater Pearls.

Black Tahitian Pearls are found in the French Polynesian and Indian Oceans and are usually 8 to 17mm in size.  Black pearls are not exclusively black and come in a variety of dark colors that include: black, grey, dark blue, blue green, green, and brown with overtones of green, red or purple.  The Akoya and Freshwater Black Pearls are two other pearl types that are color treated yet still produce overtones that provide a subtle yet striking iridescence to the black pearl.
