Blue Pearls

Blue pearls are the third most popular color of pearl jewelry searched for on the Internet.  A true blue pearl color is rarely created naturally and most likely color treated at the pearl farm, which is a common industry practice.   Blue freshwater pearls will exhibit more of a light baby blue or bright medium blue color, whereas blue pearls from the sea will have a rich deep blue or very dark blue (almost black) color to them.

The same color variation between cultured freshwater and cultured saltwater pearls exists with black pearls as well.  In general, black saltwater pearls will appear much deeper and darker than black freshwater pearls.  Often, black and dark blue saltwater pearls look very similar and are best distinguished by the pearl’s iridescent overtone of grayish-black, purplish-black or greenish-black for black pearls and greenish-blue to violet for blue pearls.

Ironically, finding true blue colored cultured pearl jewelry is not as easy as one might think.  Once again, because of the pearl jewelry industry’s color variation standards, just because a store advertises blue pearls does not mean the color is a standard blue.  When shopping online to save 50% to 70% off retail, the best way to confirm the real blue color is for the merchant to provide high detail, close-up images of the actual pearls that they are selling.  Of course, as with any pearl jewelry purchase, the consumer must always look for a money-back guarantee to protect their purchase.
