CARING FOR YOUR PEARLS:

Proper pearl care will ensure that their lasting beauty and longevity can be shared with generations to come.  Caring for pearls refers to the cleaning, storing, wearing, and stringing of your pearls.

Cleaning:  Each time after you wear your pearls, clean them gently with a clean damp soft cloth allowing the pearls to dry completely before storing them.  Gently wiping down your pearls after each use will remove body oils, perspiration and cosmetics that are harmful to the pearl’s color and luster if not regularly cleaned.  Never use ultrasonic cleaning kits or polishing cloths meant for gold and silver on pearls since they can scratch the pearls.

Storing:  Pearls should always be stored in their own protective lined box or pouch away from other jewelry that can scratch the pearl’s surface.  Gallery of Pearls packages all of its pearl jewelry in a protective lined box or silk pouch for delivery, protection, presentation, and storage purposes.  Pearls need moisture otherwise they will get brittle and crack when dehydrated.  Therefore, do not store pearls in airtight packages (plastic bags), near heaters or in direct sunlight.

Wearing:  Cultured pearls are cherished gemstones that will last generations if they are worn and cared for properly.  Always apply perfumes, cosmetics, lotions, and hairspray before wearing your pearl jewelry.  Also, avoid household cleaners when wearing your jewelry because damage to the pearl nacre, gold clasp, and/or sterling silver can occur.  Pearls should be the last item a woman puts on and the first item a woman takes off.  It is suggested that you remove your pearl jewelry during exercise or strenuous activities to avoid contact with hard surfaces or perspiration.  Also, do not wear pearls while bathing or swimming as prolonged water exposure and chlorine can damage the thread as well as the pearls themselves.

Stringing:  If your pearls are worn several times a week and year round, it is recommended that you restring your pearl jewelry once a year.  Extra space between pearls may be an indication the thread is stretching and needs to be restrung.  Pearls should be restrung with silk thread and with each pearl knotted separately to protect pearls from rubbing together or breaking all at once.
