Fine Pearl Jewelry
Fine pearl jewelry unfortunately is a misused term in the pearl jewelry industry. The term “fine” refers to superior, exceptional or high quality and just because it is used as a description of the product does not mean that it is properly used. Ironically, the majority of retail and online jewelry stores do not even use a quality rating when selling their pearl jewelry, and yet they may advertise offering fine pearl jewelry. Although determining pearl quality is not an exact science, at the very least a reputable jewelry firm should always display, use, and follow the generally accepted industry guidelines for explaining pearl quality.
The most common internationally accepted grading system in the pearl industry is the A to AAA Grading System. Furthermore, pearl grading guidelines have been established by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and it is safest to buy from a company that has certified GIA Pearl Graduates on staff. The GIA staff at Gallery of Pearls use the A to AAA pearl grading system driven by the luster of a pearl and considered to be the most important factor when evaluating a pearl. Using this system, pearls can have the following quality ratings: A, AA, AA+, and AAA.
AAA pearls have the highest luster and quality and in turn require a larger investment. Pearls rated with an A are only worth a fraction of AAA pearls and will not last as long or look as rich and aesthetically appealing. Also, sellers who use ratings above AAA (like AAA+, AAAA, or create a name) are not using the universally accepted pearl industry grading system.
Since the term fine pearl jewelry refers to superior quality pearls or high quality pearls then the product should have an overall pearl jewelry quality rating of AAA in the product description or specifications. You will find that many well-known retail jewelry stores do not use a grading system, but yet will claim to have fine pearl jewelry. How is this possible you ask? Because consumers are generally unaware about pearl quality ratings and/or the store personnel are not properly educated about pearls, this issue of improperly using the term “fine pearls” or “fine pearl jewelry” continues.
Finally, a consumer should note the manner in which the seller displays their pearl jewelry. Whether you are at a retail store or shopping online, the high quality pearl jewelry should be displayed elegantly and have detailed product specifications. In particular for online stores, look for professional, user-friendly websites that provide you with clear, close up product pictures and, of course, the AAA pearl jewelry rating. When you go to websites or stores that claim to have AAA pearls but do not provide pearl quality ratings, detailed product specifications and detailed close up images for each product, then leave the store immediately because this is an obvious red flag that the merchant is hiding something.
