Freshwater Pearl Earrings
One of the most popular gifts to give to a woman and to the bridesmaids of a wedding is a pair of freshwater pearl earrings. Particularly if purchased at online stores, freshwater pearl earrings can be one of the most economical, treasured and long lasting accessories a woman could own.
Pearl earrings are very versatile and can be worn on their own or with other pearl and non-pearl jewelry pieces. There are two types of pearl earrings: stud earrings and dangling earrings. Freshwater pearl stud earrings are universal and worn for casual, business, and formal occasions. Freshwater pearl dangling earrings are generally used for dressy or formal occasions and, like pearl stud earrings, compliment any neckline or face shape.
Earrings made with freshwater pearls are much more durable and often more lustrous than saltwater pearl earrings. The value of the pearl earrings is most influenced by the pearl’s size, shape, color, luster and surface quality. A pearl’s size is measured by its diameter in millimeters (mm). One millimeter is equal to 1/25th of an inch and 3mm equals approximately 1/8th of an inch. A difference of one millimeter size can significantly increase the price of the pearl earrings, especially for pearls that are 8mm or larger. Freshwater pearls over 8mm are more rare and difficult to harvest; therefore, the price can nearly double. The most common size for pearl earrings is 7 to 8mm.
