Freshwater pearl jewelry comes from mollusks living in fresh water bays, lakes and rivers.  Cultured freshwater pearl jewelry, which is more affordable than cultured saltwater pearl jewelry, has experienced increased consumer demand as a result of improved pearl quality and luster. Because of the variety in the color, size and shapes of freshwater pearls, even a simple pair of pearl earrings or a basic strand of pearls adds a distinctly elegant style unmatched by any other gem or metal.  Jewelry made with freshwater pearls is sometimes combined with other gemstones to produce a uniquely crafted accessory that emphasizes a woman’s individual style.  From a practical standpoint, freshwater pearl jewelry is the most durable and chip resistant genuine pearl accessory available because of its natural solid nacre protective coating.

There is a common misperception that freshwater pearls are oddly shaped, never round, and of lower quality.  This lower image exists because more abundant low-to-mid quality freshwater pearls have saturated the market for decades.  Also, remember that cultured freshwater pearls are nucleated and shaped with soft tissue whereas saltwater pearls are formed with a hard round bead.  Thus, round sea water pearls are more plentiful; however, round high quality freshwater pearls are also produced annually but in very limited quantities.

Most jewelers do not carry top quality freshwater pearl jewelry because of its rarity and because it leads the consumer to spend 1.5 to 2 times more for comparable quality saltwater pearl jewelry.  Saltwater pearls are perceived as superior, but significant advancements in freshwater pearl cultivation and processing methods have led to the creation of brilliant, round, high quality freshwater pearls that truly rival more expensive saltwater pearls.
