When a person thinks of pearl jewelry the first image that comes to almost everyone’s mind is a pearl necklace which is also the most demanded pearl accessory.  Nearly all of the world’s pearl necklace jewelry is made with cultured pearls produced from live organisms.  Combining pearls with other gemstones is common when making pearl necklace jewelry.  It has also become fashionable to not only mix various pearl necklace strand lengths, but to mix strands with different pearl colors, shapes, and sizes depending on the type of look a woman wants to achieve.

Pearl necklace style and the size of its pearls are strictly a matter of personal taste.  Traditionally, larger size pearls (10+mm) on a necklace were worn by older women or ladies of wealth, and smaller size pearls (6.5mm or less) were worn by teenage girls and young women.  Today, the size of the pearls and length of the necklace are equally influenced by current fashion trends.

The lengths of pearl necklace jewelry typically range from 12 inches to over 45 inches.   The standard names for pearl necklace lengths are:  the 12”-13” Collar, 14”-16” Choker, 17”-19” Princess, 20”-24” Matinee, 28”-34” Opera, and the 40+” Rope.  The most common pearl necklace length is 18 inches and this length best compliments a short or long neck.  Pearl necklace jewelry can be made as a single strand, double strand, triple strand, etc.  The manner in which a pearl necklace is worn around the neck can be traditional, layered, twisted, wrapped, or a knotted pearl strand.
