South Sea Pearls
The South Sea pearl is the largest and rarest cultured pearl in the world grown primarily in the warm seas of Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Myanmar. These cultured pearls are produced by the largest sea oysters, which grow upwards of 12 inches in diameter, and are known as the silver and gold-lipped Pinctada Maxima. South Sea pearls develop in two years with an average pearl size of 13mm. They range from 9 to 20mm in size and are white, silver, and gold in body color with a satin luster and rose, blue, or green overtones.
The nacre of the South Sea pearl is thick and ranges from 2mm to 6.5mm as compared to the Akoya, which is .3 to .8mm. The thicker the nacre on a cultured pearl the greater the luster and durability. South Sea pearls also come in a variety of shapes such as round, semi-round, baroque, and teardrop. Because South Sea pearls are more rare and the largest sized cultured pearl, they are also the most expensive on the market. Although the most expensive of all types of cultured pearls, the value of an individual South Sea pearl will vary depending on its color, shape, luster and surface quality.
